Poland has a layered second-hand furniture market. Depending on where you look and what you are searching for, the same type of piece — a mid-century sideboard, a pre-war oak table, a 1980s communist-era wardrobe — can turn up in several completely different contexts at very different prices.

This guide covers the four main sourcing channels: weekly flea markets (pchle targi), national and regional classifieds platforms, charity and resale shops, and formal auction houses. Each has a distinct selection profile and requires a slightly different approach.

Flea markets (pchle targi)

Regular outdoor flea markets remain one of the most reliable ways to find older furniture in Poland. They operate weekly in most larger cities and are attended by a mix of private sellers, dealers and occasional estates clearing out inherited goods.

Key markets by city

  • Warsaw — Bazar Różyckiego (Praga district): One of the oldest markets in Warsaw, operating since the 19th century. Furniture selection is uneven — some weeks mostly household goods, occasionally notable wooden pieces.
  • Warsaw — Koło flea market: Larger and more consistently stocked with furniture. Runs on Sundays. Dealers set up regularly and prices reflect awareness of value.
  • Kraków — Plac Nowy area markets: Smaller, more urban character. Better for decorative objects and smaller pieces than for large furniture.
  • Wrocław — Hala Targowa surrounds: Mixed format market with a furniture section; varies by week.
  • Gdańsk — Jarmark Dominikański: Annual summer fair with antique and second-hand stalls including furniture. Runs for two weeks in August each year.

Arrive early. At markets like Koło, the best pieces are typically sold before 9 AM. Dealers and experienced buyers arrive at opening, sometimes before.

What to check at a flea market

At a flea market you are usually buying without any return option. Before agreeing on a price, check the following:

  • Structural joints — sit on chairs, open and close drawers, check that table legs are solid and do not flex
  • Woodworm — small round holes (1–2 mm diameter) in the wood surface indicate past or active infestation; active infestations leave fine sawdust around the holes
  • Veneer condition — peeling or bubbling veneer on surfaces may be repairable but adds significant work
  • Smell — strong musty or chemical smells can indicate mould or previous chemical treatment that may be difficult to remove
  • Hardware completeness — missing drawer handles or hinges on older pieces may be difficult to source as replacements

The two dominant platforms for second-hand furniture in Poland are OLX and Allegro Lokalnie. Both allow filtering by category, location radius and price. Facebook Marketplace (Marketplace on Facebook.com) is also widely used for furniture, particularly in and around larger cities.

Using OLX for furniture

OLX is the largest Polish classifieds platform. The furniture category (Meble i wyposażenie wnętrz) is large and active. Most listings include photos but quality varies enormously. When browsing:

  • Use the location filter to limit results to within 50 km — this keeps delivery logistics manageable
  • Sort by "newest" rather than "price" initially — older listings may have already sold or the seller may be inflexible on price
  • Contact sellers by message before arranging a visit to confirm the piece is still available and to clarify dimensions

Allegro Lokalnie

Allegro Lokalnie (a subsidiary of Allegro, Poland's largest e-commerce platform) focuses specifically on local pickup deals. The interface allows searching by distance from your location. The furniture selection overlaps significantly with OLX but the user base skews slightly older.

Common issues with online listings

The main risk with online furniture purchases is condition misrepresentation. Photos are usually taken at flattering angles and lighting. Common discrepancies between listing and reality include: unstated scratches or damage on rear panels, smells not mentioned, dimensions that differ slightly from those in the listing, and structural issues not visible in photos. Always inspect in person before committing to purchase large or heavy items.

Charity and resale shops

Several charity networks operate thrift stores (sklepy z używanymi rzeczami) across Poland that include furniture. Caritas Polska and PCK (Polish Red Cross) run shops in major cities. These tend to stock practical household furniture — wardrobes, tables, chairs — at prices below market value, though selection is unpredictable and large pieces turn over quickly.

Independent resale shops (second-hand sklepy meblowe) operate in most cities and tend to pre-screen their stock for condition. Prices are higher than charity shops but lower than antique dealers, and the pieces are typically cleaned and sometimes lightly restored.

Auction houses

For older or more unusual furniture — particularly pre-war Polish pieces, Biedermeier-style items, or mid-century modern — formal auction houses provide access to catalogued stock with condition reports. Major Polish auction houses with regular furniture sales include Agra-Art and DESA Unicum, both based in Warsaw. Online bidding is available for most sales.

Auction prices typically exceed flea market or classifieds prices for equivalent pieces, but the condition documentation and legal provenance make them the appropriate channel for higher-value purchases.

Transport and logistics

Moving furniture — particularly large wardrobes, beds or dining tables — requires planning. For items up to 2 metres, most Polish courier services (InPost, DPD, DHL) will accept furniture if properly packaged, though fragile pieces should travel with specialist carriers. For local pickup, van rental services (wynajem busa) operate in all Polish cities and are the standard approach for single-piece collections.
